A little history of our beginnings, of the idea of Sa Voga and where we want to go
The Sa Voga project was born somewhat out of chance: our family had bought a local house with the purpose of preserving it. That is, doing the opposite as everyone else: instead of tearing it down, restoring it to enhance its beauty and avoid an ordinary, block-like and unappealing building style. If new constructions were to substitute the popular architecture, and the identity of villages was fading, we did not want to take part in it. We would be a counterweight.
Once the house became ours, what were we supposed to do with it? A Bed&Breakfast? Or some kind of coastal cottage? Said and done, after almost a year of renovations –work had to be done carefully to preserve the house’s architecture and not lose all the potential which it safeguarded– in April 2010 we opened the doors of Sa Voga. That house in Rial de Sa Clavella which had stolen our hearts now hosted four cosy rooms and a restaurant. We were embarking on an unknown journey, yet compromised with prioritizing the well-being of our guests, all the while taking care not to harm the environment in any of the actions which take place in a tourist business.
Some years later, we got the chance to buy the house next door, allowing us to take a step forward. The enlargement process meant adding a set of rooms and closing the restaurant to the public. In this second phase, our ideas were clearer, and we were confident on our journey. The will to become self-sustaining was maximized: we browsed and pried antiquity stores to find wardrobe doors, night stands, bed headrests and other ornamental elements, meaning that we saved on wood. We also used LED and automated lightning in order to be more energy-efficient, and we implemented rules to minimize our electric consumption and waste, for both our guests and staff, to altogether try to reduce our environmental footprint. We also changed suppliers, collaborating with local enterprises to choose ecologic products. In agreement to this philosophy, in 2017 we obtained the certification Biosphere, which recognizes us as an establishment that meets international requirements of sustainability.
We have never stopped our journey to reducing our environmental footprint, as every day we become more self-demanding and we look for new steps to take. The most recent one: reducing plastic. This step meant, for instance, replacing the individual amenities for dispensers, changing the plastic water bottles of the rooms, the bar and the buffet for glass bottles, changing the type of waste sacks that we use, etc.
This year we will become 10 years old. We are very glad to continue forward with this project, and, at the same time, we are excited to continue to grow as people and as a business. Big surprises are awaiting this 2020 and it is an honour for us to share it with all of you. Stay tuned!
Here’s a peek at one of these novelties: the Sa Voga weekends. We will be offering thematic weekends, during which our guests will be able to enjoy the hotel as well as organised activities related to culture, health, well-being, and ecology. Stay tuned to our social networks and our website to know the dates and specifics of these activities; and for the rest of news too!
We look forward to seeing you there!
